DREAM HOUSING GRANT PROGRAM
The Dream Housing Grant is a holistic, year-long program that provides financial assistance and literacy knowledge to applicants chosen through a rigorous selection process. Participants are selected and matched with a mentor who walks with them for twelve months on the journey to financial stability and mortgage eligibility. By changing the financial mindset and economic mobility of one family member, we can stop generational poverty once and for all.
During the program's year, housing burdened families will receive supplemental rental assistance, up to $500 a month for a year, to move families toward greater financial stability or homeownership.
Participants will be paired with a mentor who will walk with them and be a support system throughout the program. In addition, the program director will assist enrollment into a financial planning program, either United Way's Financial Empowerment Center or Thrivent's Money Canvas, providing the following:
Help create a budget.
Identify financial areas of need such as debt or credit.
Build a timeline of financial benchmarks to meet personal financial goals, such as buying a home or paying off large sums of debt.
Our most recent 2024 cohort participants reported going from not knowing any steps to buying a home to knowing the steps to buying a home.
63% of Americans report not having enough money to cover a $500 emergency and our participants also reported not having sufficient funds to cover emergencies at the beginning of the year. After completing the program, participants put aside an average of $2,550 in an emergency fund and $5,400 in savings.
But beyond the numbers are the stories - stories like Susan who saved $14,000 for a down payment or Lauren who shared, 'We've moved, I've managed to juggle work, therapies, school changes, promotions, crises, and still made it with some savings and a well maintained car. A year ago, I wouldn't have been able to do that.’"
